Mechanical/HVAC Engineering Manager, P.E.

Job is focused in indoor agriculture space with the majority of projects undertaken consisting of indoor cannabis cultivation projects.

General Characteristics: This position will encompass engineering oversight of projects with a team that is designing HVAC and Plumbing/Piping process systems for a variety of projects in the indoor agriculture space with a focus on modular chilled water systems equipment which the company manufactures. Must have the ability to interpret local code requirements and stamp (or acquire a stamp shortly thereafter) for projects in the United States where cannabis agriculture is legal, or soon to be legal, as well as undertaking primary design with partners stamping in Canada. Ideal candidate will assist and lead efforts for timely completion of mechanical design and technical task work on assigned multiple current projects varying in size and scope through completion of engineering tasks and efficient utilization of lower level task help where applicable.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage small team of engineers while actively working on projects to meet customer deadlines and expectations
  • Develop engineering talent through mentoring, coaching and expanding departmental knowledge
  • Prepare mechanical and plumbing system designs at the schematic, design development, and construction document phases of a project
  • Develop technical specifications as required
  • Utilize load calculations for sizing and selecting HVAC and plumbing/piping equipment (e.g. chillers, air-handling units, pumps, cooling towers, boilers, coils, filtration systems, dampers, valves, controls)
  • Under limited direction, and using prescribed methods, apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices and makes independent decisions regarding engineering complexities and methods to create designs that meet client expectations appropriate to project scope and within established project costs
  • Conduct analysis of current design as well as industry best practices and past projects to find better and more cost-effective solutions utilizing input from multiple team members
  • Work within the design process for various owners and project types and understand outside team members’ roles, perspectives, and analysis needs
  • Demonstrate an aptitude for, and understanding of, whole building M/E/P systems
  • Effectively communicate with project team and clients through regular project status updates; resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely manner and handle difficult/sensitive information tactfully
  • Protect the company’s reputation by self-checking work to avoid errors and omissions
  • Confirm that designs are fundamentally sound and address applicable codes which can vary by state
  • Be involved in development of new products and cost-effective solutions relative to mechanical products and controls in the indoor agriculture space
  • On rare occasions, may perform commissioning of mechanical and plumbing systems if owner requires
  • Help develop a commissioning plan and work with the company’s internal commissioning team to ensure that construction, installation, and operational testing conform to design
  • Stamp engineering documents as required
  • Execute additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge & Skills Desired:

  • Knowledge or ability to learn applicable codes and standards required by each state where the company does business
  • Working knowledge of building and energy codes and design/construction standards
  • Knowledge of the architecture, engineering, and construction industry
  • Effective computer skills, including proficient use of AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks, Powerpoint & Microsoft suite
  • Excellent and demonstrated communication skills — oral, written, and presentation, including the ability to represent the company in a professional manner
  • Ability to gather and interpret complex data and resolve problems
  • Ability to demonstrate the competencies of achieving results, initiative, communication, teamwork and analytical thinking
  • Past cultivation design experience and/or knowledge of indoor agriculture system a plus

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in mechanical engineering or related field required
  • Minimum 4 years in a position with related work experience in mechanical engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • NCEES Record required
  • Must have Stamped a mechanical drawing; i.e. be an engineer of record for a mechanical drawing

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly work in an office and occasionally a construction environment. May be asked to travel to jobsite for a day or two on rare occasions (less than once a month).

Job is focused in indoor agriculture space with the majority of projects undertaken consisting of indoor cannabis cultivation projects.

General Purpose:
Surna Inc. designs and manufactures equipment and systems for a variety of projects in the indoor agricultural space, with a focus on modular chilled water systems for the cannabis industry. This position will focus primarily on specifying the HVAC equipment, and designing the plumbing/piping process systems to meet customer requirements. The ideal candidate will assist efforts for timely completion of mechanical design and technical task work on multiple assigned projects, varying in size and scope through completion of engineering. In addition, this role would be responsible for providing technical guidance to customers during the design and installation stages of the project.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design custom company hydronic cooling systems
  • Work closely with customers, permitting agencies, third party engineering companies, and component vendors to accurately size and lay out hydronic system components such as pumps, chillers, and process piping, based on industry best practices and ASHRAE/ASME standards
  • Support project manager by providing engineering deliverables on, or ahead of, schedule and budget
  • Provide engineering document deliverables, including customer facility drawings, and respond timely to customer technical inquiries
  • Draft and maintain standard engineering document templates utilizing AutoCAD
  • Support research and development activities as necessary
  • Remotely support construction, installation and commissioning, or equipment service/maintenance schedules (limited travel < 10%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 1 – 3 experience with HVAC/mechanical facilities design
  • Effective computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Suite and AutoCAD required
  • Chilled water plant or hydronic cooling strongly preferred
  • Construction background a plus
  • EIT preferred

Physical/Sensory Demands:

  • Extensive computer work in an office environment
  • Occasional travel to cannabis cultivation facilities
